What is happening in first grade??

We hope you had a wonderful and restful Thanksgiving vacation! Please remember with the colder weather, students need to have an extra pair of shoes to wear in the classroom. Also, packing an extra pair of socks is helpful. Many students do not have an extra pair of PE shoes at school, please be sure to have a pair at school or to pack shoes in your child’s backpack on PE days.

**Three different books or reading sheets come home each week. Please be sure your child reads these stories to practice fluency and comprehension.

This week our learning goals are:
Literacy
1. Comprehend similarities and differences within a story.
2. Distinguish long from short vowel sounds in spoken single-syllable words and two-syllable words.
3. Know final –e represents long vowel sounds.
4. Write sentence that compares and contrasts characters.

Math
1. Demonstrate correct counting within frames and arrows.
2. Use concrete models, including objects and number lines to represent addition and subtraction situations.
3. Practice writing and telling time to the ½ hour.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We hope you have had the opportunity to enjoy the snow! Please remember that the students do not have school Wednesday through Friday. We will be dismissed at 3:30 on Tuesday. Enjoy a restful Thanksgiving holiday with your family!

4. Demonstrate correct transition use in a story without prompting.

First Grade this week!

We hope you are enjoying the snow!!! With the colder weather, please be sure your child has the appropriate clothing for outdoor play. Also, please remember we have two early outs this week: Wednesday and Friday. Both days the students will be dismissed at 1:25.

**Please contact your child's teacher as soon as possible if you cannot make your conference time.**

Math Learning Goals for the Week:
Students will be able to
1. Demonstrate correct skip counting with 10s, 5s and 2s. Introduce counting by 3s.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of addition concept.
3. Practice subtraction concept.
4. Practice writing and telling time to the ½ hour.

Reading and Writing Learning Goals for the week:
Students will be able to

Happy November!

We hope you had a great weekend and enjoyed our first beautiful snow! With the cold weather already here, please be sure your child has the appropriate clothing for outdoor play. Also, there have been a few lice cases throughout the school. Please check your children daily and remind them to not share hats and coats.

Also, conference confirmation times will be sent home this week! We are looking forward to meeting with each of you to share your child’s exciting progress for this trimester!!!

Our learning goals this week are listed below.

Math:
1. Identify even and odd patterns with shapes and dominoes.
2. Skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s. Learning goal for first grade is counting to 120. Focusing mainly on 2s.
3. Understand number models/number sentence for addition and introduce subtraction.
4. If your child already has the addition/subtraction concept mastered, please be sure facts are practiced.

Reading and Writing:
1. Read and write words that include the long o and contractions.
2. Identify pronouns orally and in a story.
3. Identify and retell the sequence of a story.
4. Identify transitions in a story. Use first, next and last in writing.

Happy Halloween!

Early Out at 1:25-this Thursday, November 3rd

Parent Conferences will be Wednesday and Thursday, November 16th and 17th. A sign-up sheet will be sent home later this week.

Learning Goals for this week:

Math:
1. Identify patters with shapes and numbers.
2. Skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s. The end of year goal is counting to 120.
3. Understand number models/number sentence for addition and subtraction. The end of year goal is to be able to add and subtract within 20.
4. Understand and represent place values to the tens.

Reading and Writing:
1. Read and write words that include the long i, ch, wh and tch.
2. Identify pronouns orally and in a story.
3. Identify and retell the author's purpose in a story.
4. Identify transistions in a story. Begin to apply them in writing. (First, Next, Last)

Red Ribbon Week!

This week is full of more fun and lots of Red! It is Red Ribbon Week. Our school will celebrate being Drug-Free!

Monday- Wear Red Day
Tuesday- Wear something red, white or blue (all three is good too) Real heros don’t do drugs…
Wednesday- Wear your school colors- Show your drug free school spirit.
Thursday-Wear mismatched Socks- Sock it to drugs.
Friday- Wear a hat day! Use your head not drugs.
Fall Festival!!

Math Learning Goals for the week:
Students will be able to
1. Identify the value and the name of a penny and nickel.
2. Tell time to the hour drawing hands and writing the analog time.
3. Count mixed coins with nickels and pennies and write the total value.
4. Understand number models/number sentence for addition and introduce subtraction.
5. Understand and represent place value to the tens.

Reading and Writing Learning Goals for the week:
Students will be able to
1. Read and write words that include the long a, soft c and g.
2. Identify a pronoun in a sentence that is read in a story and identify a pronoun in their own writing.
3. Identify and retell the cause and effect in a story.
4. Write a topic sentence and a detail sentence.

Short Week!

Hello Millerville Families,

We have a short but busy week! We will continue to focus on our learning goals from last week. Also, 1/2 of us travel to the Apple Barrel on Monday and 1/2 on Wednesday. Our bus loads at 9:30 and leaves at 9:40. We should return to school around 11:15. I have contacted parents who were interested in attending and divided the students accordingly. Please contact me right away if you still would like to join us!

Early out on Wedneday begins at 1:25
No School on Thursday and Friday
